Nobody likes a spammer. It’s not a good use of your time to log into your LinkedIn account and send out a mass of connection requests, nor is it advisable because you may get blocked by LinkedIn if you add too many people in a short period of time or if you have a large number of pending connection request. If you believe blasting your present connections with your newest product, service, or event will make you instant friends, think again. These are typical types of spamming that would instead lose you relationships than gain them.
Don’t use people just for introductions. Please get to know someone that has accepted your connection before attempting to obtain introductions to others in their network. People are cautious of their networks and will choose who they let in. If they refer you to their connection, and that introduction or meeting doesn’t go well, then THEIR reputation is at stake. Remember, it’s all about building relationships.
Remember the Golden Rule: Treat others as you want to be treated. Follow your basic good judgment: If you don’t want to be inundated with connection requests and product invitations or offers to join teams, why would you subject others to the same treatment? Connect with individuals who share your passion or whose organizations complement yours. A customized connection request also makes a significant difference.
Allow time to build relationships and to build your network. You will not see a major jump in your network overnight, and you’ll be unlikely to achieve it if you use spam techniques to interact with individuals. Consider networking as “sowing seeds” where you discuss what you do and who you are in a natural, organic, and genuine way rather than in sales mode. Your connections will learn about your business and, if they appreciate your manner, they will readily promote people to you over time. They just need to know more about you and that takes time.
Provide value to others. One way to showcase your expertise to your LinkedIn connections is to share consistently. Write articles, participate in groups, ask questions, and share about your mission and why it’s important to you. Educate your followers about what you do or the problems you can solve.
Networking on LinkedIn boils down to common sense: Act professionally so you portray your business in the best possible light and be authentic in your interactions. Your ideal clients will be drawn to you once they get to know you as a person instead of as a salesperson.
